Sicily’s landscape is dotted with incomplete structures from the 20th century. There are 696 unfinished buildings in Italy that have been identified and documented to date, and around 40% of them are located in Sicily. They are the representation of political corruption and planning disasters, while also becoming a cultural symbol for the island.
Inspired by the artist proposal Incompiuto Siciliano Archaeological Park by Alterazioni Video in 2008, the project studies six unfinished sites based in Giarre, the town with the greatest concentration of unfinished public works in Italy. Through research carried out by gaming processes, the project identifies the ‘Incompiuto’ as an architectural resource for new construction projects in the town. The incomplete structures are quarried into components or demolished into rubble, with six community buildings presented to explore different ways of incorporating them within the construction of newer buildings. The Incompiuto are reused to fulfill their original promise of providing community facilities and their unfinished spaces and forms are celebrated in the designs to memorialise a unique history of Sicily.
This board game for two players is inspired by Carcassonne. Spatial reconfigurations are generated in each match. The 'Incomputio' are reused as a resource for development.
The proposed designs form a masterplan in Giarre. A route of 2km is defined to link together the six developments along the vertical axis of the town.
Each Incompiuto has a unique design based on the site and architectural programme. This creates an architectural language that refers to the context, history and character of each.
This study sets up different scenes within a microenvironment using daily objects, constructing miniature worlds full of mystery and wonder.
