The Self-Build Assembly of Rammed Earth' is a project based around a community initiative to encourage a change in Hallfield Estate’s management. The aim is to empower residents to reclaim the land through an urban commons, exploring collaboration between the land owner and the civil society.
The proposal reassembles the neglected residents’ forum, reusing materials available on site, such as clay and building waste: concrete rubble, brick, windows and doors. Rammed earth is used as the main form of construction, as it guarantees quick, cheap, and low labour production.
The self-build assembly manual diagrammatically breaks down the construction of building components, making it easier for residents to visualise and follow the steps.
The idea of handmade assembly is explored through methods of stitching a frame model that will double up as a device for discussions on site with Hallfield residents.
