Wunderkammer: German for ‘cabinet of curiosities’

The project is for a new Alibaba Group headquarters in Speicherstadt Warehouse District in Hamburg, Germany. It is equipped with its own futuristic logistic warehouse (basement) and Expo market (above ground) which is open to the public. The design reinterprets traditional Chinese timber architecture as Vierendeel truss walls and timber mega cores, creating a new design within the existing building parameters, whilst retaining the Warehouse District’s original neo-Gothic brick façades.

The project’s brief was a result of in-depth research into the urban development of modern port cities, and the global capital flow port cities are so dependent on. The research concluded that Alibaba Group would consequentially anchor in Hamburg through the New Silk Road initiative, while the port of Hamburg handles Alibaba’s global logistics.

Winter Scene

Speicherstadt Christmas Market and World Christmas Light Expo are directly connected to global manufacturers, who compete to decorate Europe’s most favoured winter events.

Autumn Scene

The freed ground floor space allows flexibility of display and flow, while engineered timber megastructures host flagship show rooms and high-profile business conferences.

Above and Below, Cross Section

Above ground, timber is used to indicate inhabitable spaces. Below ground is concrete and has spaces for fully automated worker bots which humans oversee.

Construction Sequence: From Conservation to Timber Megastructures

The design overcame many technical challenges, such as finding a way to retain a world heritage brick façade over a canal whilst excavating a new basement extension and highway.

Simulated Manufacture: Bespoke Timber Joints

Taking inspiration from traditional Chinese timber architecture and the constructional advantage of digitally aided timber joinery, customised timber mega joints were designed.
