The Barking Reach Wholesale Market Hub is a vision for the future of London's wholesale markets, combining Billingsgate fish market, Smithfield meat market and Spitalfields fruit and vegetable market to create the UK's largest wholesale market within Barking and Dagenham. The project involved investigations into the use of concrete, rebar and 3D printed stainless steel in conjunction with each other and alongside the utilisation of digital tools to create large spanning structures which adopt funicular geometry.
A topological optimisation process was developed using principal stress line analysis, graphic statics and the principles of funicular structures. The digitally developed geometry, specific material properties and integration of these materials resulted in a system which achieves a state of equilibrium. This was further analysed and tested using digital techniques.

The outdoor market features a gridded network of canopies which adopt funicular geometry to allow for reinforced concrete members to span between the nodes.
