Transcending Gondolas into Architecture

Project details

Student Paul-Andrei Burghelea
Programme
Unit PG21
Year 4

This project is based in Venice, Italy and involved the analysis of the traditional Venetian gondola. Paul-Andrei studied its specific geometries as well as its traditional and cultural importance to the city. The project harnesses the traditional craftsmanship of the few remaining gondola workshops and – combined with computation processes – develops a new event space in the north eastern canals of Venice. This was done by using a parametric production pipeline, involving Grasshopper, GhPython and Rhinoceros. This parametric approach allowed for the deconstruction of the meaning behind the traditional Venetian gondolas, and provided the means to reproduce these attributes in the form of a functional architectural concept.
