The project began as an investigation into the many copies of Venice and the idea of an architectural echo. Located next to Venice’s main hospital, the 'Echo' building acts as a music therapy centre, detached from the main hospital complex. The acoustic spaces not only create musical and sound echoes; the idea of the echo also transcends the spaces and the architecture. The echo of the spatial qualities and the lighting conditions can be found throughout the building. The unique design of the conical roofscape frames only the sky, immersing visitors in the particular sound and light conditions. The roofscape drops down and meets the ground plane at six distinct points, thus allowing views straight through the building, from one end to the other. When visitors are inside the building, they are completely immersed in the sounds and light of the space. This heightens an awareness of the sky above and the acoustic environment. Due to its location next to the water, the courtyard is designed to flood depending on the tide levels. The different ground tectonics are designed such that they hint at a curated vision about which spaces can and should be used at certain times.
