This project aims to explore a personal feeling of living in two worlds: the familiar (Hong Kong), and the unfamiliar (London). Initial investigations with miniatures and souvenirs were an attempt to make the foreign feel more familiar, and to understand the desires that stem from nostalgic feelings.
For the project 'The Nostalgic Hotel', the original intent was to produce a 1:12 diorama of a portion of the design, supplemented by 1:1 test samples. The aim was to capture atmospheric moments and show how it feels to be in the world of these personal nostalgic desires.
However, as a result of remote working, these planned physical models were replaced by drawings. The intent shifted towards showing the intimate relationship between the two worlds experienced within the realms of the Nostalgic Hotel. This provided a different way to express nostalgia, desires and the feeling of living in-between worlds. The drawings are coloured with sampled photos of home, as if moments within the hotel remind one of other places. In the final drawing, the composition of these sampled images bring about a third world: a journey through desired places that can only be formed in a foreign place.
