Village for Children, Bridgeton

Most cities are accidentally designed around adults. But what happens when you put children at the forefront?

In Bridgeton, Glasgow, estimates of male and female life expectancy are 'lower than the Glasgow average'. According to Glasgow City Council, single parent households make up 51% of all households with dependent children and a quarter of households are 'overcrowded'. Levels of child poverty are much higher than the Glasgow average.

The traditional housing in Glasgow is the tenement, but a lack of green space makes it hard for children to find a safe space to play in close proximity to their parents. Parents also may not have time to take their children to play spaces.

Research unearthed how the likes of Colin Ward encouraged daring in children as well as safety. In his book The Child in the City (1978), Ward explores the relationship between children and their urban environment and whether this relationship has been lost.

In an attempt to ease the overcrowding, the proposal is for a housing scheme with apartments of different sizes on a site which currently accommodates a single purpose low density building. A large play space between blocks is introduced so children can play safely nearby.
