Often in architecture the first instinct is to destroy rather than rebuild. This project’s philosophy is that every building has an inherent value, both financially and conceptually.
Situated in Lewisham, London, the Millcroft House is an eight storey residential building currently managed by Phoenix Housing. Working with Phoenix, this project proposes an intergenerational co-living scheme that reconnects a disconnected group of elders back to their community through shared living.
The scarcity of space within London has supported the assumption that more space equals value. However, with an ageing population, older generations are finding themselves living in homes that are too large for them. The value of a space doesn’t lie within its abundance, but with the people. The relationship between space and value has been a recurring theme throughout the past year. It is reflected in the project through doubling the number of bedrooms, but also by adding social value through using the circulation of the building as a means to generate conversation amongst residents.
