This project follows on from an investigation into the nature of privacy and disobedience in the workplace; how office architecture shapes the interactions and behaviour of its inhabitants.
As an alternative to the traditional urban workplace, this project seeks to create work and home environments shaped to the needs of the individual inhabitant. A system of digitally manufactured components were used to allow the inhabitants of the building to make, maintain and remake the spaces they live and work in.
The element of choice within the architecture hinges on a system of joinery, which facilitates easy the assembly, change and growth of a framework. The envelopes of the buildings are completed with interchangeable infill elements, which can be chosen and adapted to suit the intended purpose of the space. Architecture here is shaped by the preferences and needs of its users.
Taking advantage of contemporary possibilities for remote working, the project shifts the office workplace from the city to rural hinterlands. The setting of a valley in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy alleviates the spatial and financial constraints of an urban site. Rather, it creates opportunities for malleability, change and community growth.
Exploring the idea of projecting an inhabitant's body into the natural setting, creating an interplay between the workplace and the bucolic site through the buildings' architectural language.
The skin of the building takes inspiration from embossing. The activities of the occupants are pressed into the inner surfaces of the building to be expressed by the façade.
Municipal facilities, including an auditorium/meeting hall and a strip of function rooms to house the activities of the growing community.
The inner boundaries of the workplace are defined by lightweight, flexible partitions made from paper honeycomb which can be moulded and articulated by the activities of the workers.
Through the growth of the workplace and residences a community is formed; the communal effort of construction and maintenance permeates into the social familiarity of the inhabitants.
