The 'Bedouin Heritage Centre' provides the nomadic Bedouins with a space in the city to temporarily inhabit. It is also a place in which they can educate others about their culture and traditions, aiding the preservation of a culture which is predominantly transferred through speech.
The project is inspired by previous Bedouin settlements of tents as well as mud and limestone houses. The work reimagines these traditional construction techniques with contemporary digital modelling and fabrication tools. The walls of the building are made up of stretched fabric on a framework that is then sprayed with mud to solidify the structure. Shade and privacy are then created through the draping of fabrics, emulating the atmosphere of the fabric tent.
Exploring fabric’s ability to create minimal surfaces for concrete formwork and secondary fabric skins, creating unique atmospheric conditions.
This shows the proposal’s interface with the street, including immersive seating areas, vertical circulation and cooling pools.
