Corporeality Versus Hyperreality

Project details

Student Grace Baker

Unit UG7
Year 2

Located in the Miami Everglades, the building is a commercial human pharmacy for exploiting the antibiotic properties of the white mangrove. It is integrated into an artificial mass propagation centre for genetically enhanced mangrove species. Acting as a catalyst for growth, the project sees the reintroduction of mangroves into the destroyed surrounding landscape with the aim of rejuvenating these sites. Inspired by the unfolding of the cell nucleus, its modification, the synthesis of adapted proteins and its final human consumption, the project proposes a form of heterotopia: an unfolding between paradoxical functions. Human and plant modification exists simultaneously within a forest of bamboo to create a strange illusionary atmosphere of the human 'whole', defined by humanity's inability to control.
