The project is a memorial for the 'Unknown Soldier' and those who have died in various conflicts throughout China leading up to and during the Cultural Revolution.
The site for the memorial was strategically chosen for the programme, both on a national and local scale. Shanghai is a city that has been greatly involved in modern Chinese history, and locally the site is situated between several historical sites.
The project deals with the perception of the Cultural Revolution, where two realities are present: the local government view, and the view by foreigners and dissidents. A physical memorial dedicated to the victims of the Cultural Revolution cannot exist within China, and as such the proposed physical design would be a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The building is designed to accommodate the use of virtual reality, as well as the use of rainwater on smooth concrete mirrors to trick virtual reality (VR) sensors to displace the visitor’s viewpoint in the VR world. These displacements bring the visitor into the view of a Chinese Communist Party member and a Red Guard during the events of the Cultural Revolution.
