Sat between the bustling and colourful Ridley Road Market as well as the railway tracks of the London Overground, sites twelve and thirteen place new buildings over, behind and in-between a complex and unique urban context.
Buildings either grow up or along the linear market and spaces are tightly squeezed, spilling out to the market and the railway.
Ridley Road Market was established as a place where immigrants in the mid-1900s gathered as a community of sellers, traders and friends. 'The Dining Room' embraces these spontaneous interactions by transforming the forlorn roofs of the market stalls into an elevated communal dining area, where the spirit of food production and consumption is celebrated.
Sat between the market and the railway, a pink bubble wrapped corridor sits between two cranes, part of an alternative context creating an urban dockyard for the market. Inside are hoardings of all things railway, and all sorts of spots to sit and see the trains.
'The Weavers' Studio' is an extension to a pre-existing carpet shop on Ridley Road, leaving the storefront untouched and providing the spaces required for the weaver to work and live on the site. Instead of disturbing the market, the programme adds to an established amenity whilst emphasising the market's atmosphere.
A cooking school by day and restaurant by night. It is a place for teaching, cooking, and serving the less popular parts of a cow sourced from the butchers below, and vegetables grown on site.
The proposal revolves around a private resident having the ability to open their living area to host a wide variety of public gatherings and events whilst still maintaining a functional private space. The program focuses on establishing a facility for public discussion; its success relies on community involvement and conversation.
